It was build in the year of 594, a base of China's foreign trade by sea, and a starting point of Guangzhou's ancient "silk road on the sea". It is said that a foreign tributary came to Guangzhou with two jackfruit saplings, and planted in front of the temple, so the temple is also called "Boluo" temple. Its temple fair was the largest folk fair at Guangzhou. People say when you visit the temple today, you will marry a wife tomorrow. It symbolizes that the "silk road on the sea" originates from Guangzhou, which has been opening to the outside, and it prays the safety for the sailors sailing afar.

The temple was completed during the reign of the Sui Dynasty and ceremonies of sacrifices were performed under the supervision of the emperors'men, the history of which is still engraved in stone tablets. It has stone inscriptions of Su Shi, a poet of the Song Dynasty and Chen Baisha, a Cantonese scholar of the Ming Dynasty. The present form of the octagon-shaped Sunbathing pavilion was reconstructed in 1953.
